The Rembetika Hipsters started as a duo in 1996, Nick Diochnos (bouzouki, vocals), and Allen Baekeland (guitar, vocals), longtime musical pals looking for a departure from their rock and country backgrounds. The Rembetika Hipsters are a nationally-acclaimed Greek music group based in Calgary, Canada. Since 1996, their repertoire has included authentic Greek Rembetika songs, original Canadian compositions in Greek, Balkan & Middle-Eastern styles, contemporary belly-dance instrumentals and jazz-influenced bouzouki pop. The word rebetiko is derived from a Turkish root: rebet, meaning rebellious or disobedient. The Rembetika Hipsters collaborate with the Australian/Canadian singer and recorder player Racheal Cogan on two traditional songs - "Tzivaeri" from the Dodecanese and "Sergiani" from Athens.
